change came to the real world…..

Alabama. An interestingly beautiful place. Along with other areas of the South, it is emblematic of White supremacy at its most brutal. Slavery, lynching, bombing, Ku Klux Klan activities, Jim Crow…segregation…

But what is not often understood about the South is that though there was oppression and brutality, there was resistance to it too. People educated themselves, organized themselves, and stood up against the horrors of the “real world”. They stood up in Birmingham, Montgomery and Selma and demanded justice and equality for all people. They came from Gee’s Bend, Camden, Knoxville to demand voting rights and desegregation because they knew it was right to do so. People from all over joined them because they knew it was right too. In Alabama.

Yes..there was inhumanity-but there was courageous and determined humanity as well….and some important battles were won. The work continues.

I realize that this piece was written in the past tense. Inhumanity, oppression, racism and brutality are not in the past tense. All of that still requires much attention and work.
