An Opt Out Letter for Parents

the glaciers are melting

the glaciers are melting

Pushing back is an important activity that many parents are beginning to realize they must do in order to protect their own children from the abusive and harmful standardized testing movement that has grown to out of control proportions with the introduction of Race to the Top and Common Core testing.

Opting out can be a first step. But this issue needs everyone’s attention and focus to take back our schools and support dedicated professionals in the difficult and essential work they throw their hearts and minds into every day.

School is not about getting into a good college so you can have a nice house and buy the many things you are manipulated to think you need. Not to me. Not to you. Not to many of us.
This kind of race contributes to the decimation of our seas, our air, our drinking water, the fragile circle of life.

School is about becoming a person who can work with others to solve problems. School is about learning things in your own way , in your own time, and contributing to the community in some way eventually..whether it be as a thinker, a dreamer, a poet, a painter, a maker of music, a medical practitioner, a plumber, an inventor, an expert machinist, a baker, a farmer, a scientist..it goes on and on..add more here…..

A race to the top needs a bottom to race from and in a race like this only a few can actually occupy the top tier…and then there is the rest of humanity….. down there …contributing to the comfy lives and doing the bidding of those on the shining top of the writhing heap.

So..I thought you might like to see a draft of a letter that some folks in NY are using to opt out. It is a decisive first step in pushing back and turning the race into a united effort for our kids and the future of humanity and the planet.

It matters.

“What the best and wisest parent wants for his own child, that must the community want for all its children. Any other ideal for our schools is narrow and unlovely; acted upon, it destroys our democracy.”-john Dewey

Thanks for your comments. Deeply appreciated.

It would be great to have a curriculum that we could all reference and use as the educated and thoughtfull professionals we are, but this does not seem to be the direction of common core as illustrated so far through incredibly inappropriate lessons for the early years and app laden testing machines for the later years.

Some of the sories from teachers and parents on the frontlies are heartbreaking.

  3. I agree with your disdain for the Race to the Top initiative which makes states compete for federal funds that once were given to states equitably. I take exception to the notion that common core is just testing, though I do wholeheartedly agree that the testing element is problematic in how it has made our students’ education more about paying to develop expensive tests and sell electronic devices upon which to take them. Please keep the dialogue flowing. Excellent post!
